Real neon lights are gas discharge lamps that produce very little excess heat. Your neon light will not feel hot to touch no matter how long you leave it on for. It is also not possible to overheat since energy is efficiently used, unlike incandescent bulbs or halogen lights which release excess energy in the form of heat. At most you may be able to sense some warmth.
Always make sure to follow correct installation and safety instructions and only use the base and power supply that came with your unit to avoid damage to the base. Below are safety guidelines for neon desk lights:
- Make sure the glass tube is inserted properly into the base (you will hear a click when in place)
- Make sure the glass tube is facing forward (screws in the bottom plastic part facing the back of the base where the power supply enters)
- Only use a 12V 500mA DC adapter
- Plug all adapters into wall outlets (North American) and avoid power bars if possible
